Comment:
I enjoyed Pretty Woman, a very light but entertaining comedy, so I was eager to see Julia Roberts in a similar movie after some flop or minor roles. However, I didn't expect to see such a funny movie and, in fact, there is actually nothing in common with Pretty Woman!

The story is based on a very simple idea that is extended to fill the whole movie (which is also not very long): a woman's best friend is going to get married but she is so resentful that tries to stop him using a number of subtle artifices. The main supporting character is her gay friend who tries to help not only with suggestions but also pretending to be her future husband with the hope to make her friend jealous.

It is this character, played with great fun and irony by Rupert Everett, that provides the most entertaining situations with his silly actions and speeches. The other male character isn't that charming, Cameron Diaz is always very excited and lively, Julia Roberts does her job in a competent way but I couldn't find her character strong enough to be completely captivating.

Even from the beginning (ie. the opening titles!) it is quite evident that music will play a big role in the movie. So, while this isn't properly a 'musical', there are many scenes (compared to the average movie) where characters sings in either likely (eg. a karaoke pub) or unlikely situations (eg. a whole restaurant singing "I Say a Little Prayer").

It is interesting to note the key role that the telephone (especially mobile phones) has in this comedy. I didn't find this irritating because it didn't seem to be an advertisement (far too common in today's movie) and it usually provided some more fun (including the last scene). Instead, I haven't been completely impressed by the misuse of Internet and emails, once again they showed an unlikely use of this technology in a scene that was sensible as far as the story is concerned but that obviously showed a number of factual inconsistencies about how emails work!
