Comment:
In balance between a light comical comedy and a story about social relationships, The Object of My Affection provided a very entertaining view whilst keeping a certain level of seriousness. This movie won't probably be as successful as some other similar comedies released earlier this year (My Best Friend's Wedding being the most similar and the most successful) but I hope that it will at least be remembered as a good example in its genre.

The story is about George, a first grade teacher, and Nina, a social worker, who share the same apartment. However, they are not actually a couple since George is gay and just left his former boyfriend while Nina is engaged with Vince and is pregnant. When Nina breaks up with Vince, she asks George to be the father of her child and he seems to accept although life won't be easy for them due to the obvious sexual incompatibility.

Considering this is a comedy, considering that a happy end was absolutely certain, considering that various hints scattered throughout the whole movie could effectively lead to what everybody would expect, I was very surprised to see that the finale was not as plain as it could be! Actually, it was very well thought and it was a winning point of the movie, I couldn't possibly find a better one myself.

The rhythm during the whole movie was fairly lively, hence there were no severely boring parts. Some funny joke here and there helped to keep a light tone although they never made the level of seriousness drop too much. On the other hand, there were no grave speeches or situations which could possibly ruin a movie by forcing a point of view or a strong idea that the audience may or may not share.

The actors were very good and the characters charming, both the main and the secondary ones. The narration seemed particularly well balanced, everybody had a perfectly tuned role and the occurrence of events were accurately timed to give enough variety without overloading the action. I think I should stop saying that I don't like light comedies, these year I've seen various instances of this genre and I liked them all!
