Comment:
From the director of the wonderful Thelma & Louise, G.I. Jane has nothing in common with it except the fact that there is a sort of underlying feminism in both movies.

The first half of the movie strictly recalls the first half of Full Metal Jackets but doesn't seem to add anything particularly interesting to the genre, even the peculiarity of having a woman in a Navy Seals training camp isn't developed too deply. This part of the movie is even stronger than its predecessor (but probably not so vulgar) although it also features a few unlikely speeches with somewhat funny outcomes.

The second half made me remember last year's Courage Under Fire because of the desert battle where a woman is the heroin. However we are so far from the seriousness of that great movie since here we have the typical winning situation where the heroin simply saves the situation and everything ends well.

The other sub-stories developed across the whole movie are either banal (the love affairs) or obvious (the political parts). What really save this movie are the sustained rhythm and the well made war scenes (either 'real' or simulated). In short, this is a good action movie but a very weak drama, given the subject it could have been better the other way round...
