Comment:
I fully agree with the promotional tagline for Godzilla: size does matter! Unfortunately, the size of the plot holes was so big to swallow Godzilla and New York together, so I haven't been much impressed by this big-effects low-brain movie.

The plot is a modernization and Americanization of the original Japanese movie, hence Godzilla is now the result of the nuclear experiments made by the French at Mururoa and the city that Godzilla decides to destroy is New York instead of Tokyo. The most significant attempt to change the original story is provided by the fact that Godzilla is pregnant and his (her?) eggs soon give life to a multitude of little monsters. Both the American army and a group of French soldiers fight against the monster and in the end they 'win'. No, I didn't spoil the finale here, I can't believe anybody could even remotely think that Godzilla would manage to survive!

It is quite easy to find the few positive features of Godzilla: the special effects. Unfortunately, after a couple of Jurassic Parks there isn't much more to show off... This doesn't mean that I missed the Japanese man in a plastic costume of the original Godzilla movies but the digital Godzilla looked too similar to Spielberg's T-Rex and to the monsters of the Alien saga. The dark and rainy setting is quite interesting, but I wonder if it wasn't just a stylish way to hide various flaws in the special effects.

The most annoying thing of this movie is the stupidity of the plot, and more specifically of the characters involved. I know I am always seeking for plot holes, especially in this kind of 'action' movies, but in this case it has been an incredibly easy task! I can mention Godzilla chasing some helicopter flying horizontally instead of escaping upward, or I can wonder how they could 'lose' such a big monster in New York or why the subway and the Madison Square Garden looked completely abandoned...

The only actor that gives a good characterization of his role is Jean 'Leon' Reno, everybody else provides a very plain and boring performance. Admittedly, the script, the characters and the dialogues didn't seem to leave any chance to demonstrate the actors' ability. Godzilla and his offspring have the important role to show that they are more stupid than the average human character, sometimes they succeed, sometimes they fail...

Probably I took this movie too seriously, if it wasn't for the realistic special effects and for the sober atmosphere you could simply consider it as the parody of itself. Even so, the movie is still somewhat boring, long and uninteresting.
