One fine day

30  APR
WED
She was having a perfectly bad day... Then he came along and spoiled it.

Directed by  Michael Hoffman
Written by  Terrel Seltzer, Ellen Simon
Starring:  Michelle Pfeiffer (Melanie Parker)
George Clooney (Jack Taylor)
Mae Whitman (Maggie Taylor)
Alex D. Linz (Sammy Parker)
Runtime: 108 minutes
Plot:
Melanie Parker, an architect and mother of Sammy, and Jack Taylor, a newspaper columnist and father of Maggie, are both divorced. They meet one morning when overwhelmed Jack is left unexpectedly with Maggie and forgets that Melanie was to take her to school. As a result, both children miss their school field trip and are stuck with the parents. The two adults project their negative stereotypes of ex-spouses on each other, but end up needing to rely on each other to watch the children as each must save his job. Humor is added by Sammy's propensity for lodging objects in his nose and Maggie's tendency to wander. - John H. Henderson

Comment:
I usually don't like this sort of comedies based on a weak story and featuring various funny moments, nor I like movies based on children (of the 4 main characters we can consider that 3, not 2, are children!). However this movie has been surprisingly better than various older similar stories.

The first good point is that the rhythm is very quick, there are almost no moments of 'inactivity', so there is no time to think about the weaknesses of the story! Another good point are the many comical moments, sometimes obvious and sometimes unexpected, that amuse and fill the otherwise simple plot.

The ending is not particularly catching, but there was obviously no other possibility and it could have been even worse. It still remains a weak point though, and, in common with other similar movies, I had preferred if the last 5 minutes would have been completely removed!
